Book Review #2: Point of Retreat by Colleen Hoover

Overwhelming. very great in amount; so strong as to be irresistible; very intense.

Synopsis

Layken and Will have managed to overcome the obstacles that threatened to destroy their love, proving that they are destined for one another. What they are about to learn, however, is that the things that have brought them together may be the very things that ruin their connection forever...

Layken is left second-guessing the relationship whilst Will is jumping over hurdles to prove his love for her. What the young lovers discover about themselves along this journey may change their entire world, and the lives of those who depend upon them the most...

Every love story has their ups and downs, including Will and Layken's. The story continues after a tragedy strike into Layken's life and now, Will and Layken are together. They become inseparable as Will's and Layken's brothers become best buddies and thus, a family. Including their friends, Eddie and Gavin. Out of the blue, their trust become a test as someone from Will's past came back. This book makes my emotions come up as anger, happy, giddy, frustrated and mixed into one hurricane that I want to scream. Like how I say at the opening of this review, overwhelming

Maturity and responsibilities are two main theme comes up in Point of Retreat. How Will and Layken ready to face this obstacle if it can makes them stronger or breaks them apart. Previous book, Slammed, it introduce Will who has to be a parent to his little brother when he was 18 years old because their parents died in a car accident.  Now, Will have to balance his responsibilities to Caulder and his love to Layken. For Layken? She have to tackle maturity issues. After she met someone from Will's past, she starts to questioned their relationship. How Will have to prove their love is true love.

I have read this book two times.  The first time I read this book on last year, March. At first, I dislike this book because of Layken. She should trust Will and will not thought too much about his love. I feel this separation thing should not be put in this book. After one year, I reread this book again because I want to finish reading all of Colleen's books. This second time, I think about both perspectives and I thought what if that thing happens in my life, what should I do? I will doubt it and ask for some time to rethink this. I think this is the reality of a relationship. Everybody will experience it but the consequences are the choices they have made whether it is good or bad.

As always, Will is the heart in this book. At first, I hate Will because he didn't tell the truth but when he prove his love to Layken with his poem, DING DING DING! We got a Winner!! ^_^ I even more in love with him with his actions in Point of Retreat. Especially this diary entry below. Totally broke my heart. *sad*  After the second climax, seriously, I didn't notice that part will happen. Just like this song, Storm from Lifehouse. It really captures Will's emotions of losing his girl. Just listen to it, okay? The minor characters of this book was great. I love Kiersten. She teach me how to curse using Butterfly. Actually, Colleen Hoover write that.. as Kiersten. :) Caulder and Kel as usual mischievous and understanding about their brother and sister's relationship. They even liked it because they're inseparable as best buddies. Another relationship that face challenges was Eddie and Gavin and in the end, they can overcome it. I like them.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 29

I've learned something about my heart.
It can break.
It can be ripped apart.
It can harden and freeze.
It can stop. Completely.
It can shatter into a million pieces.
It can explode.
It can die.
The only thing that made it start beating again?
The moment you opened your eyes.

In this book, Colleen Hoover wrote a poem about "Write Poorly". You don't know how that poem inspire me writing these reviews without me judging my poor writing skills. Thanks, Colleen Hoover! Another one thing I liked in Point of Retreat is Layken's mother paper stars. I like that each paper stars comes from famous quotes which her mom found, create the stars and puts in a jar for Will and Layken. Those quotes are like advices in life and they cannot take those stars until they really needed. Three favorite quotes from her mother I like (another one is the picture below) :

So if could find it in your heart
To give a man a second start
I promise things won't end the same.
- The Avett Brothers
I want to have friends that I can trust, who love me for
the man I've become... not the man that I was.
- The Avett Brothers

End note: Trust is one of the foundation in building a relationship. If you live in the past, how you can trust anyone or yourself? The longer you live in the past, the less future you have to enjoy. "Keep moving forward"  ⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆
